He spent 65 years as an imperial functionary — exposing conspiracies, collecting consulships — then held the throne for fifteen months. The transition mattered more than the tenure: forced by mutinous guards to name an heir, he picked Trajan and launched the dynasty that would give Rome its zenith.
Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born on 8 November 30 and rose through decades of service under Nero and the Flavians, helping expose the Pisonian conspiracy in 65 and earning consulships in 71 and 90. When Domitian was murdered in a palace plot on 18 September 96, the Senate declared the 66-year-old Nerva emperor. He promised to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian, but his reign staggered under financial strain and his inability to control the army.
