About this person
Born November 12, 1945, son of journalist Scott Young, he started playing music in Winnipeg in the 1960s before moving to Los Angeles and co-founding Buffalo Springfield. The solo career that followed - often with backing band Crazy Horse - produced Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969), After the Gold Rush (1970), Harvest (1972), On the Beach (1974), and Rust Never Sleeps (1979), while he also joined Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for the chart-topping Déjà Vu in 1970. His distorted electric guitar work earned him the nickname "Godfather of Grunge" and led to a 1995 collaboration with Pearl Jam on Mirror Ball. He directed films under the pseudonym Bernard Shakey and contributed music to Philadelphia and Dead Man. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him twice - as a solo artist in 1995 and with Buffalo Springfield in 1997 - and Rolling Stone ranked him the 30th greatest guitarist of all time in 2023.
