About this person

Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte was born in 1808 at the height of the First French Empire, son of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland, and nephew of Napoleon I. As a young man he led two failed coups against the July Monarchy and was imprisoned in 1840. After the February Revolution toppled that regime in 1848, he was elected president of the French Second Republic, then seized power by force in 1851 when he couldn't constitutionally run again. He proclaimed himself Emperor of the French in 1852, launching the Second Empire - 22 years that brought rapid industrialization, Haussmann's grand reconstruction of Paris, a consolidated railway system, modern banking, the Suez Canal, and an expanded colonial empire in Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. He allied with Britain to defeat Russia in the Crimean War, helped Italian unification by defeating Austria, and annexed Savoy and Nice, though his attempt to install a French-backed emperor in Mexico collapsed. In July 1870, pressured by the public, he declared war on Prussia; the French Army was rapidly defeated and Napoleon captured at the Battle of Sedan. Dethroned, he went into exile in England and died there in 1873.
