Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte was born in 1808 at the height of the First French Empire, son of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland, and nephew of Napoleon I. As a young man he led two failed coups against the July Monarchy and was imprisoned in 1840. After the February Revolution toppled that regime in 1848, he was elected president of the French Second Republic, then seized power by force in 1851 when he couldn't constitutionally run again. He proclaimed himself Emperor of the French in 1852, launching the Second Empire — 22 years that brought rapid industrialization, Haussmann's grand recon…
