Mohamed Naguib was born in Sudan on 19 February 1901 and rose through Egypt's military ranks, earning decorations and a wound in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Opposed to British occupation and King Farouk's corruption, he became leader of the Free Officers Movement of nationalist army officers and helped topple the monarchy in July 1952. He led the Revolutionary Command Council, served as Prime Minister, then became Egypt's first president, securing Sudan's independence and the exit of British troops.
