1st shogun of the Kamakura shogunate (1147–1199)
He turned a five-year civil war into the blueprint for seven centuries of Japanese rule. The first man to hold real power as shogun, he made the samurai caste supreme and moved authority out of the imperial court into a military government that would shape Japan until the 1800s.
Minamoto no Yoritomo was born May 9, 1147, son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo and heir to the prestigious Kawachi Genji line of the Seiwa Genji family. After maneuvering into position as rightful Minamoto heir, he led his clan against the Taira from Kamakura in 1180, opening the Genpei War. Five years of fighting ended at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185, the Minamoto victorious and the Taira finished. In 1192 he became shogun, founding the Kamakura shogunate and establishing samurai supremacy over the old court order — the beginning of Japan's feudal age.
