Greek Athenian statesman and general (c.550–489 BC)
The Athenian general who commanded at Marathon in 490 BC, where outnumbered Greeks shattered the first Persian invasion of Europe — then fell from grace almost immediately after.
Miltiades the Younger was born around 550 BC, son of Cimon Coalemos, an Olympic chariot-racing champion. He rose to command Athenian forces at the Battle of Marathon, where his leadership helped repel the Persian assault on Greece. The victory made him one of Athens' most celebrated military figures, but his fortunes reversed sharply in the aftermath. He died in 489 BC, leaving behind a son, Cimon, who would become a prominent Athenian statesman in his own right.
