About

Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov was born 15 May 1891 and wrote novels and plays that put him on a collision course with Soviet power. The White Guard, the plays Ivan Vasilievich, Flight, and The Days of the Turbins — the state banned much of it between 1922 and 1926, deciding it "glorified emigration and White generals". Stalin himself ordered the suppression. Strange exception: Stalin loved The Days of the Turbins, attended it at least 15 times, once called a theater personally to demand its production after Bulgakov had fallen from favor. The contradictions never resolved into sustained succes…
