Alexander Blok defined Russian lyric poetry during the Silver Age - the fevered, feverish decades before the revolution when verse mattered as much as politics and a well-turned stanza could make you a legend in the salons of St. Petersburg.

About this person

Born in November 1880, Blok came of age as Russian letters entered their most ornate and urgent phase, the so-called Silver Age when symbolism and mysticism flooded the page. He rose to become the period's most celebrated lyric poet, his work capturing the beauty and dread of a world on the edge. The revolution arrived, the old order collapsed, and Blok lived just long enough to see it all burn. He died in August 1921, forty years old, as the smoke cleared.
