About this person
Born Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in August 1973, she married the future King Haakon VIII and brought an older son, Marius Borg Høiby, into the royal fold. The couple went on to have two children: Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus. Her years as crown princess drew repeated controversy - past relationships scrutinized, ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein exposed, and later her eldest son's rape conviction in a lower court. In 2018 she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive scarring of the lungs. Eight years later she underwent a lung transplant, a rare and high-stakes procedure that underscored the severity of her condition.
