About

Born 14 March 1908, Maurice Merleau-Ponty studied under Husserl and Heidegger and made perception the center of his work: how meaning arises not in detached consciousness but in the lived body moving through the world. In 1945 he co-founded Les Temps modernes with Sartre and Beauvoir, editing the leftist magazine while writing across biology, psychology, politics, and art. He was the only major phenomenologist of his generation to engage deeply with the sciences, and that crossover made his ideas foundational for later efforts to ground phenomenology in cognitive research.
