Marshal General of France (1696-1750)
An illegitimate prince who became France's highest-ranking military officer, Maurice de Saxe won battles that redrew the map of 18th-century Europe — then wrote the theory down.
Born 28 October 1696, the illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong, Maurice de Saxe began his career in the Army of the Holy Roman Empire before shifting to French service. Between 1740 and 1748, during the War of the Austrian Succession, he delivered a string of victories that made his name — none more decisive than Fontenoy. France rewarded him with the rank of Marshal, then pushed him higher still to Marshal General. He died 20 November 1750, leaving behind not just conquered ground but a body of military theory that outlasted the wars themselves.
