Born in Fort Smith and raised in Edmonton, Carney left Harvard with an economics degree in 1987 and added a doctorate from Oxford by 1995. After 13 years at Goldman Sachs, he joined the Bank of Canada in 2003 and became its governor in 2008, steering monetary policy through the financial crisis. In 2013 he crossed to London as the first non-British Governor of the Bank of England, a post he held until 2020 while chairing the Financial Stability Board and guiding the bank through Brexit turbulence. He moved into private finance and climate diplomacy before Justin Trudeau's 2025 resignation pulled him back. Carney won the Liberal leadership in a landslide, called an election without ever having run for office, and led the party to an unexpected minority - then a majority a year later through floor-crossings and by-elections. As prime minister, he scrapped the consumer carbon tax, passed the One Canadian Economy Act during a U.S. trade war, launched Build Canada Homes, recognized Palestine, and pivoted the party back toward the centre.
