Born in Ottawa on December 25, 1971, while his father Pierre Trudeau was prime minister, Justin Trudeau grew up in the machinery of Canadian politics before stepping away to teach high school in Vancouver. He returned to Montreal in 2002, chaired a youth charity, and won a House of Commons seat for Papineau in 2008. In 2013 he took the Liberal Party leadership, then led it from third place to a majority government in 2015 - the largest seat gain in Canadian history - becoming prime minister at 43. His government legalized cannabis, introduced a federal carbon tax, resettled Syrian refugees, and navigated the pandemic with aid programs and a national vaccine rollout, though he was twice found to have violated ethics law and once invoked the Emergencies Act in a move later ruled against by the Federal Court. After his deputy minister resigned in December 2024 amid falling polls and a trade war with the United States, Trudeau announced in January 2025 that he would step down, prorogued Parliament, and resigned as prime minister on March 14 after Mark Carney won the leadership race.
