She wrote the script for Hiroshima mon amour and turned grief into a language that cinema had never spoken before — spare, haunted, built from silences as much as words.

Biography

About

Born Marguerite Germaine Marie Donnadieu on 4 April 1914, she became Marguerite Duras and spent decades working across forms most writers keep separate: novels, plays, essays, experimental films. The script for Hiroshima mon amour in 1959 brought her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and marked her as someone who understood how memory breaks and reassembles on screen. She kept pushing into stranger territory as a filmmaker in her own right, making work that refused easy comfort. She died on 3 March 1996, leaving behind a body of writing that still reads like a dare.
