Marcus Furius Camillus was a statesman in the early Roman republic, active roughly between 448 and 365 BC. His reputation rests on two pillars: the capture of the city of Veii and his defense of Rome after the Battle of the Allia, when Gauls sacked the capital. For centuries those deeds made him a model of Roman virtue and military prowess. Modern scholars, however, have grown skeptical. Many now believe the exploits attributed to Camillus were either wrongly credited or fabricated outright, woven into legend by later generations hungry for founding myths.
