Lucrezia Borgia was born 18 April 1480, the illegitimate daughter of Pope Alexander VI and Vannozza dei Cattanei. Her family used her as a bargaining chip: she was married to Giovanni Sforza, Lord of Pesaro, then to Alfonso of Aragon, Duke of Bisceglie and illegitimate son of the King of Naples, and finally to Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. She served as governor of Spoleto. Tradition holds that her brother Cesare may have had her second husband murdered once his political value faded.
