About this person
Born Salvatore Lucania in Italy on November 24, 1897, he came up through New York's Five Points Gang and survived the Castellammarese War by killing his way to a new idea: abolish the single boss of bosses, create a board. He became the first official head of what's now the Genovese family. In 1936 District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey convicted him on compulsory prostitution charges - thirty to fifty years. During World War II the U.S. Navy cut a deal through his associate Meyer Lansky: naval intelligence in exchange for a commuted sentence. In 1946 they let him out on the condition he leave forever. He was deported to Italy, where he died on January 26, 1962; they allowed the body to come home for burial.
