Born in 17 BC to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and Julia the Elder — Augustus' only daughter — Lucius was adopted by his grandfather alongside his older brother Gaius Caesar, positioning both as the emperor's chosen successors. The brothers' political and military careers were mapped for empire. On 20 August 2 AD, while traveling through Massilia, Gaul to meet the Roman army in Hispania, Lucius fell to sudden illness and died.
