Daughter of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (died 182)
A Roman emperor's daughter who tried to kill her own brother — the emperor Commodus — and paid with her life when the plot collapsed.
Born on 7 March 148 or 150, Lucilla was the second daughter of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina the Younger, raised inside the heart of imperial power. She married Lucius Verus, her father's co-ruler and adoptive brother, binding her to the throne's inner circle. After Verus died, her younger brother Commodus became emperor, and the distance between them turned to conspiracy. Around 182, at about 33, she orchestrated an assassination attempt and coup. It failed. Commodus ordered her execution, and the sister who had once stood beside emperors was killed on her brother's command.
