Louis was born 13 March 1372, son of King Charles V and younger brother to Charles VI. When Charles VI's mind began to fracture publicly, Louis worked alongside Queen Isabeau of Bavaria to govern during the king's recurring bouts of insanity. That put him on a collision course with John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, in a bitter struggle for control of the realm. Parisians despised him — for his affairs, and for his part in the Bal des Ardents tragedy that killed four nobles and nearly the king.
