For a generation of Russians, he was the voice that made the news feel like it mattered - sharp, stylish, unafraid to linger on a detail that state TV would blur past. When NTV still had teeth, Parfyonov held the microphone.

About this person

Born January 26, 1960, Parfyonov rose through Soviet and then post-Soviet television to become Producer General of NTV from 1997 to 1999, shaping the channel during its most independent years. His daily culture news program Namedni turned into something larger: a series of documentary films he narrated on-site, weaving popular history with a presenter's eye for the telling moment. The shows ran for years in rebroadcast, fixing his cadence in the culture. From December 2004 to December 2007 he edited the Russian edition of Newsweek, and from 2012 to 2018 he sat on the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights - a perch that signaled access even as the space for independent journalism narrowed around him.
