About

André Léon Blum grew up shaped by the Dreyfus affair, became a disciple of Jean Jaurès, and inherited leadership of the French socialists after Jaurès was assassinated in 1914. In 1936 he took office as prime minister in the Popular Front government and rolled out sweeping economic and social reforms, though he held neutrality in the Spanish Civil War to keep the violence from crossing the border. Out of power by 1938, he spoke against appeasing Germany. When France fell in 1940, Vichy put him on trial for treason — the proceedings never reached a verdict — and shipped him to Buchenwald.
