King of Italy, Holy Roman Emperor, and Duke of Spoleto and Camerino (880-898)
Crowned emperor at twelve alongside his father, he ruled the chaos of post-Carolingian Italy alone by fourteen — the last monarch to govern by capitulary before that entire administrative world went dark.
Born around 880 in San Rufino to Guy III of Spoleto and Ageltrude, Lambert inherited a fragmenting realm. At eleven he became King of Italy in 891, then co-emperor with his father the following year. Guy III's death in 894 left the teenager sole ruler of the Empire, Duke of Spoleto, and Duke of Camerino. He died at eighteen on 15 October 898, the final figure to issue law in the Carolingian capitulary form — a thousand-year administrative language that died with him.
