King of East Francia
He overthrew his own uncle to seize a throne, then spent a dozen years trying to hold together the fracturing Carolingian world — the last man from Charlemagne's male line to wear both the crown of Italy and the imperial title.
Arnulf started as Duke of Carinthia around 850, a regional power in the crumbling empire. In late 887 he moved against his uncle, Emperor Charles the Fat, toppling him to become King of East Francia. He added Lotharingia to his domain and pressed claims over West Francia, Burgundy, and Italy. In 894 he invaded Italy and took Pavia, though he withdrew quickly. A second invasion brought him to Rome, where Pope Formosus crowned him Emperor on 22 February 896. He returned to East Francia again and died at Ratisbon on 8 December 899, his rule in Italy contested to the end by Lambert and Berengar I.
