Ruler of Old Great Bulgaria
A 7th-century ruler who gathered nomadic tribes into Old Great Bulgaria — a short-lived steppe confederation that splintered after his death but seeded the Bulgarian states that followed.
Kubrat led the Onogur–Bulgars and around 632 founded Old Great Bulgaria, a confederation on the Pontic steppe. His name likely came from Turkic words meaning "to gather" or "wolf" — fitting for a leader who united scattered groups under one banner. The confederation didn't outlast him; after Kubrat died, his sons divided the realm, and the tribes scattered across Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. One branch would eventually settle south of the Danube and become the First Bulgarian Empire.
