Swedish politician (1844-1916)
A Swedish MP who spent his career arguing that nations should settle disputes with words instead of weapons — and won the 1908 Nobel Peace Prize for it.
Klas Pontus Arnoldson was born on 27 October 1844 in Sweden and made his living as an author and journalist before entering politics. He sat in the second Chamber of Parliament from 1882 to 1887, where he pushed his conviction that arbitration could replace war. He helped found the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society, anchoring a movement that gained traction across Europe. In 1908 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Fredrik Bajer for their work advancing international arbitration. He died on 20 February 1916.
