About this person

Born around 1982-1984 as the second son of Kim Jong Il and a mistress, he studied in Switzerland before attending Kim Il Sung University. Groomed as successor from 2009, he took power after his father's death in 2011 and quickly consolidated control, reaching marshal rank by 2012. He purged his uncle Jang Song-thaek in 2013 and orchestrated his half-brother Kim Jong-nam's assassination in Malaysia in 2017. Shifting from his father's military-first doctrine, he pursued the Byungjin policy - building the economy and the nuclear arsenal in parallel - and oversaw the country's four most recent nuclear tests plus its first intercontinental ballistic missile. The 2017-2018 crisis gave way to unprecedented summits with Xi Jinping, Moon Jae-in, and Donald Trump in 2018 and 2019, but talks collapsed without progress on reunification or disarmament. In December 2023 he declared reunification efforts formally abandoned and had the Arch of Reunification demolished; by 2024 he had signed a defense pact with Russia and dispatched North Korean soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces in Kursk.
