He built the Great Pyramid of Giza — the only ancient wonder still standing — and yet almost nothing else survived him. One tiny ivory figurine is all we have of his face, and the ancient historians who came later painted him as a tyrant.
Khufu took the throne as second pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty in the 26th century BC, succeeding his father Sneferu. He commissioned the Great Pyramid of Giza, the sole surviving wonder of the ancient world, but the rest of his reign remains poorly documented — most of his buildings are lost, his statues and reliefs exist only in fragments. A small ivory figurine unearthed at Abydos in 1903 is the only intact image of him.
