She's been one of Bollywood's most-watched faces for over two decades, a screen presence that spans blockbuster comedies, gritty dramas, and ensemble epics that broke box-office records. The staying power comes from range - and from never pretending to be anyone but herself.

About this person
Born into the Kapoor acting dynasty in 1980, daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, younger sister to Karisma, she made her debut in 2000 with Refugee. A breakout year followed with the massive hit Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001, then a string of commercial failures and critiques that her roles had grown repetitive. The 2004 drama Chameli, in which she played a sex worker, reset the trajectory - suddenly she was taking on a riot victim in Dev and a Desdemona-inspired role in Omkara (2006). Jab We Met in 2007 won her the Filmfare Best Actress prize for playing a woman who couldn't stop talking. The years since have mixed dramatic work - Kurbaan, Talaash, Heroine, Udta Punjab, Laal Singh Chaddha - with the kind of crowd-pullers that mint money: 3 Idiots, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Bodyguard, Singham Returns, the Golmaal and Good Newwz comedies, and the female-led hits Veere Di Wedding and Crew. Married to actor Saif Ali Khan, mother of two, she's built a second career in fashion, launched clothing and cosmetics lines, co-written memoirs and nutrition guides, hosted radio, and worked with UNICEF on girls' education since 2014.
