About

Born in the mid-1630s, Kara Mustafa Pasha rose through Ottoman ranks to become grand vizier, the sultan's chief minister and military commander. He orchestrated the empire's last major campaigns into Central and Eastern Europe, pushing Ottoman power to its farthest western reach. The siege of Vienna in 1683 became his defining moment — and his undoing. When the city held and relief forces broke the siege, the defeat shattered Ottoman momentum. He was executed by strangulation on 25 December 1683, paying the traditional price for a grand vizier's catastrophic failure.
