About

Julius Robert von Mayer was a German physician who crossed into physics and chemistry, and in 1841 he wrote one of the first clear statements of what became the first law of thermodynamics: energy can be neither created nor destroyed. A year later he described oxidation as the engine of life and suggested that plants turn light into chemical energy. But his work went unnoticed. In 1843, James Joule published his own calculation of the mechanical equivalent of heat, and history handed him the priority Mayer had earned first.
