18th-century French physician who argued humans are basically machines in L'homme machine (1747). A materialist before materialism was trendy, he made bodies and biology scandalous dinner-table talk during the Enlightenment.
Julien Offray de La Mettrie was a French physician and philosopher, and one of the earliest of the French materialists of the Enlightenment. He is best known for his 1747 work L'homme machine.
