Alberto Aguilera Valadez wrote 1,800 songs, sold 100 million records, and turned flamboyant stage presence into a form of rebellion inside Latin music's old guard. As Juan Gabriel, he became Mexico's top-selling artist of all time - and the nicknames stuck: Juanga, El Divo de Juárez.

About this person

Born Alberto Aguilera Valadez on 7 January 1950, he took the name Juan Gabriel and built a catalog that broke both sales records and the unspoken rules of machismo in Latin pop. His nineteenth album, Recuerdos, Vol. II, moved eight million copies in Mexico alone - still the country's best-selling album. He recorded with Isabel Pantoja, placed "Amor eterno" in the Library of Congress registry, and left behind songs like "Así Fue" and "Se me olvidó otra vez" that other artists kept singing long after his death on 28 August 2016. Rolling Stone ranked him number 172 among the greatest singers three decades into a career that never really ended.
