About

Gibbs earned the first American doctorate in engineering from Yale in 1863, spent three years in Europe, then returned to New Haven as a professor of mathematical physics in 1871 — a post he held until his death in 1903. Working alone, he transformed thermodynamics into a deductive science, co-created statistical mechanics with Maxwell and Boltzmann, independently developed modern vector calculus alongside Oliver Heaviside, and applied Maxwell's equations to physical optics.
