About this person

Johann Josef Wenzel Anton Franz Karl, Graf Radetzky von Radetz was born into Czech nobility on 2 November 1766. He rose through Habsburg military ranks to become chief of the general staff during the later Napoleonic Wars, helping architect the Trachenberg Plan and the Leipzig Campaign that culminated in the decisive Battle of Leipzig. Afterward he overhauled the Austrian army's structure and earned the nickname "Vater Radetzky" from his soldiers. When revolution swept Italy in 1848, he commanded Austrian forces at the Battle of Custoza and again at Novara in 1849, both victories that kept the empire intact and Italian unification at bay. Johann Strauss I composed the Radetzky March to mark the Custoza win; the piece outlived the cause. He died 5 January 1858, his wars footnotes to a melody played every New Year.
