Born 26 June 1760, Johann Baptist Josef Adam Johann Nepomuk Aloys Franz de Paula was the fourth son of Franz Joseph I, Prince of Liechtenstein - not the expected heir. He became Prince in 1805, just in time to watch the Holy Roman Empire dissolve the following year. For the next eight years he governed as regent while Liechtenstein navigated the Napoleonic wars and their aftermath. He resumed the title of Prince in 1814 and held it until his death on 20 April 1836, having steered a microstate through the most violent political reshuffling Europe had seen in centuries.
