Joseph Hooton Taylor Jr. was born March 29, 1941. Working with Russell Alan Hulse, he discovered a new type of pulsar that opened fresh ground for studying gravitation. The find marked the first indirect detection of gravitational waves — ripples in spacetime that wouldn't be directly measured until Barry Barish, Kip Thorne, and Rainer Weiss managed it years later. Taylor and Hulse shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics for the work. The discovery stood as a bridge: proof hiding in the data, waiting for technology to catch up.
