About this person

Born into the Forbes family in Colorado in 1943, Kerry enlisted in the Naval Reserve after Yale and commanded a Swift Boat in Vietnam, earning three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, and a Bronze Star. He came home and flipped: testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the Fulbright Hearings, he called U.S. policy in Vietnam a cause of war crimes, becoming a national face of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. After a failed 1972 House run and a stretch in law, he was elected Massachusetts lieutenant governor in 1982, then won a Senate seat in 1984. He held it for 28 years, securing the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 only to lose to Bush. Obama named him secretary of state in 2013; he brokered the Iran nuclear deal and signed the Paris Agreement for the U.S. He returned under Biden as the first special envoy for climate, serving until he left to work on Biden's 2024 campaign, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom that May.
