American music manager, father of the Jackson family (1928–2018)
The father who drilled his children into the most successful family act in pop history—then spent decades answering for the cost of that success.
Joseph Walter Jackson was born July 26, 1928, and became a talent manager who shaped the Jackson family into an entertainment dynasty. He pushed his children through rigorous rehearsals and strict discipline, launching the careers of the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson's solo ascent. In 2014 he was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. He died June 27, 2018, two days short of his 90th birthday.
