João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço was born 5 March 1954 and rose through the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, serving as the party's secretary-general from 1998 to 2003. He ran the defence ministry from 2014 to 2017, then was tapped in December 2016 to lead the MPLA's list in the August 2017 legislative election. Under Angola's 2010 constitution, the top candidate of the winning party automatically becomes president. The MPLA took 150 seats, and Lourenço was sworn in on 26 September 2017, succeeding José Eduardo dos Santos after nearly four decades. A year later, in September 2018, he became party chairman - the formal pinnacle of the movement that has governed Angola since independence.
