About
João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço was born 5 March 1954 and rose through the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, serving as the party's secretary-general from 1998 to 2003. He ran the defence ministry from 2014 to 2017, then was tapped in December 2016 to lead the MPLA's list in the August 2017 legislative election. Under Angola's 2010 constitution, the top candidate of the winning party automatically becomes president.
