Austrian Archduchess, mother of Maria de' Medici (1547-1578)
An Austrian archduchess who married into the Medici dynasty and became Grand Duchess of Tuscany, she's remembered now mostly through her daughter Marie, who would marry into the French throne.
Born 24 January 1547 as an Archduchess of Austria, Joanna crossed into Italy through marriage to Francesco I de' Medici, becoming Grand Princess and later Grand Duchess of Tuscany. The union tied Habsburg blood to Florentine power at a moment when both houses were reshaping the continent's balance. Among her children was a daughter, Marie de' Medici, who would become the second wife of King Henry IV of France. Joanna died 11 April 1578, her lineage outlasting her by centuries.
