Born January 17, 1962, James Eugene Carrey spent the 1980s grinding through comedy clubs and bit parts before In Living Color (1990–1994) made him visible. Then 1994 detonated: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber in a single year, followed by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever in 1995. That five-film run made him the first comic actor to command $20 million upfront, starting with The Cable Guy in 1996.
