According to the book of 1 Kings, Jeroboam son of Nebat led a revolt of ten tribes against Rehoboam, ending the United Monarchy and founding the northern Kingdom of Israel. He reigned for 22 years - Albright dates it 922 to 901 BC, Thiele 931 to 910 BC - during which "there was war continually between Rehoboam and Jeroboam." He also fought Abijam, Rehoboam's son and king of Judah. The biblical text repeatedly describes him as "doing evil in the sight of the Lord." Recent academic discussion has questioned whether Jeroboam I existed as a distinct figure or may be a retrojection of the later Jeroboam II, though no consensus has emerged.
