About this person

Born in Brittany in 1928, Le Pen founded the National Front in 1972 and spent four decades as its president, hammering on immigration, unemployment, and what he called traditional values. Through the 1980s his ideas crept into the mainstream - a shift the French called "lepénisation of minds" - and his five runs for president made him impossible to ignore. On 21 April 2002 he stunned the country by finishing second in the first round, forcing a runoff he lost in a landslide to Jacques Chirac; the date became a byword for crisis. Courts convicted him for downplaying the Holocaust and fined him for inciting discrimination against Muslims, but he kept his seat in the European Parliament until 2019. In 2015 his daughter Marine, by then leading the party, expelled him after fresh controversy. He died in January 2025.
