Jean Jaurès began as a Moderate Republican before drifting left into social democracy and the reformist wing of French socialism. By 1902 he led the French Socialist Party, rival to Jules Guesde's harder revolutionary line, and in 1905 brokered the merger that created the SFIO. He rejected the dictatorship of the proletariat, working instead to reconcile idealism with materialism, the individual with the collective, and internationalism with love of country. An antimilitarist as Europe lurched toward war, he was assassinated on 31 July 1914, the night the guns began. He remains a towering figure of the French Left.
