About

Born 10 August 1924, Lyotard ranged across epistemology, aesthetics, the body, the city, the sublime — an interdisciplinary sprawl that resisted tidy borders. After the late 1970s he became the voice of postmodernity, analyzing how its arrival reshapes the human condition when old certainties fracture. He wrote 26 books, taught across continents, and co-directed the International College of Philosophy alongside Derrida, Châtelet, Faye, and Lecourt. He died 21 April 1998, leaving a vocabulary that stuck: we're still using his terms to describe the world he saw coming.
