The fourth Mughal emperor ruled an empire at its height while opium and palace intrigue hollowed him from within. His wife Nur Jahan ran policy from behind the throne; his sons raised armies against him; his memoirs and patronage left a trail of miniatures and monuments that outlasted the instability.
