Jacob Burckhardt

Jacob Burckhardt was born in Basel on 25 May 1818 and trained as a historian of art and culture in Switzerland. In 1860 he published The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, a study that broke the mold: instead of isolating paintings or sculpture, he wove together social institutions, daily life, and the arts into a single fabric. The method made him one of the major progenitors of cultural history — the idea that a period's essence lives as much in its routines as its masterpieces.
