Born 19 July 1819, Keller grew into a poet before shifting to prose. His novel Green Henry and his cycle of novellas Seldwyla Folks became touchstones of literary realism, capturing readers with their clear-eyed attention to ordinary lives and small-town manners. By the late nineteenth century he stood among the most popular narrators writing in German. He died 15 July 1890, four days shy of seventy-one.
