He took the throne in a revolt, lost it in a coup, then returned as a blind figurehead for his son — just in time to watch the Fourth Crusade sack Constantinople and end the empire he'd twice failed to hold.
Isaac was born in September 1156 into the extended Komnenos imperial clan; his grandmother Theodora was the youngest daughter of Emperor Alexios I. In 1185 he led a revolt against Emperor Andronikos Komnenos, seized power, and established the Angelos dynasty on the Byzantine throne. He ruled for a decade until 1195, when he was overthrown and blinded. In 1203 he was restored as co-emperor alongside his son Alexios IV Angelos in a arrangement brokered by the Fourth Crusade.
