About this person
Isaac was born in September 1156 into the extended Komnenos imperial clan; his grandmother Theodora was the youngest daughter of Emperor Alexios I. In 1185 he led a revolt against Emperor Andronikos Komnenos, seized power, and established the Angelos dynasty on the Byzantine throne. He ruled for a decade until 1195, when he was overthrown and blinded. In 1203 he was restored as co-emperor alongside his son Alexios IV Angelos in a arrangement brokered by the Fourth Crusade. The fragile dual reign lasted only until January 1204, when both were deposed; Isaac died on 28 January 1204, weeks before the Crusaders sacked the capital he had ruled twice and held onto never.
